Lighthouse,
The |
The
bathroom containing the main shower area located at the entrance to the Beach
Trail. |
Lodge,
The |
The
largest building at Camp Owatonna is home to the dining hall, kitchen, and
the Director's Office. The Lodge Wall is decorated with plaques
detailing past inspection winners, team captains, team results, white feather
winners, and black feather winners. |
Long
Lake |
Spanning
11 miles from Naples to Harrison, this fresh water lake is home to Owatonna's
boating and swimming programs. |
An
old fashioned movie house located in Bridgton. The original movie house closed in October
2005 and was demolished in February 2006.
A new Magic Lantern was built in its place and re-opened to
movie-going patrons in February 2008. |

Basket |
The
general store in downtown Harrison serves outstanding homemade pizza and has
plenty of Ben & Jerry's ice cream in the freezer for afterwards. |
Morning
Meeting |
A
short all-camp meeting held in the Lodge after Quiet Hour where inspirational
thoughts relating to the current week's bible lesson are shared. |
The
tallest peak in the Northeast located an hour from Camp Owatonna in New
Hampshire. Home of the "world's worst weather" and one of
world's oldest cog railways. It is
not uncommon to experience gale force winds and even snow flurries at the
summit during July! Snow masses prevail in the Ravines well into June
and July. Usually included in Senior Division hiking trips. |

The
adjacent sister camp of Owatonna located on the shores of Long Lake. |

A
popular destination for Staff on days off. This New Hampshire resort
town is about 40 minutes from Camp Owatonna and features several outlet
shops, restaurants, movie theaters, and great views of the surrounding White
Mountains. It was also home to the Volvo International
Tennis Tournament from 1975 to 1984. |

The
northern headquarters of the Appalachian
Mountain Club (AMC) and the trailhead for an excellent day hike up the
tallest peak in the Northeast, Mount
Washington. Located 15 miles north of North Conway. |

Pits,
The |
The
outdoor barbeque area usually used for Sunday evening meals. First
cabin to assemble at the flagpole generally gets to eat first. |
The
unusual camel shaped peak viewable from the Lodge porch located about 10
miles west of Bridgton. The
northern peak of Pleasant Mountain is home to the Shawnee Peak ski area. |

Point,
The |
The
stretch of land at Camp Newfound that reaches out into Long Lake connecting
the sandbar to Hairbrush Island. Also, the home of the Gazebo which is
known to be a favorite spot on Friday evening socials and a delightful spot
to relax and hangout during Sunday afternoon beach parties. |
A
picturesque State Park and Beach just north of Bath, Maine. One of the longtime
primary sites for the annual camp outing to the beach and a popular day off
destination for Staff. |

Pump
House |
A
small shed containing a gasoline pump that was located near the Director's
Cottage until its removal in the 1980s. A popular destination for the
early morning run at the end of calisthenics and for those who were late to
flagpole assembly. The gasoline pump is now located at the Counselor's
Cabin. |
Raid |
An
unannounced excursion to Camp Newfound at night. |
Rec
Hall |
A
multi-purpose cabin located along the edge of the woods which has been used
for equipment storage, thr trip shack, and
sometimes home to the CIT program. |
Riflery
Range |
An
individual activity located near the Newfound Trail that was suspended after
1977. The range remained in place for a few years and old rifle shells
could be found in the sand until the range was completely removed in the
1980s. |
Rope
Swing |
A
contraption nestled in a tree high above the edge of Long Lake on the trail
between Newfound and the Boat Dock. |
Route
35 |
The
state highway / road linking Naples and Harrison where the entrance to Camp
Owatonna is located (two miles south of Harrison center). |
The
US highway that serves as the main thoroughfare linking Portland-North
Windham-Bridgton-Fryeburg-North Conway. |

Senior
Division |
Collective
grouping of Warriors, Chiefs, and usually CITs. |
Social |
The
Friday evening get-together with Camp Newfound. Usually lots of
dancing! |
Smoke
Shifter |
Mythical
camping device designed to redirect unwanted camp fire smoke and fumes.
Comes in two convenient left-handed and right-handed models. |
Legendary
paddle-wheeler carrying tourists (and sometimes campers) across the waters of
Long Lake and down through the Songo River Locks to
the waters of Sebago Lake. The
original Songo River Queen burned in 1981 and was
replaced with the Songo River Queen 2 in 1982. |

Store |
That
special occasion where campers are allowed to have
candy and soda. For a while, the store actually existed on the corner
of the lodge porch where the Camp Mom's office is presently located. |
Team
Points |
Rewarded
to teams each Saturday following work projects, sporting events, and Council
Fire presentations. Usually read out loud at the first three Council
Fires by the Director. Then silence until the final banquet when places
are revealed. |

Village |
Secret
location off the Beach trails for each team to gather before Council
Fire. Site of many original song and poetry compositions. |
Tripper |
Member
of the Owatonna Staff responsible for maintaining the camping gear, planning
trip itineraries, planning trip menus, trip transportation, and other occasional
surprises. |
Trip
Shack |
Wherever
the camping gear is located (usually the Rec Hall). Best place to find the
Tripper. |
Truck,
The |
Timeless
1940s vehicle continuously rehabbed to transport campers to inter-camp games
and trips. No longer in service. |
Water
Carnival |
Annual
swimming meet against Camp Newfound. |
Convenient
general store and marina right on Long Lake in Harrison. Adjacent to the Long Lake Creamery, which
serves really good ice cream! |

An
annual men's summer tennis tournament that was held in North Conway from 1975
to 1984. The tournament was held at a racquet club at the base of Mount
Cranmore. The tournament moved to Vermont and then New Haven, CT before
ending in 1998. The Volvo tournament featured famous tennis
professionals such as Arthur Ashe, Guillermo Vilas and Jimmy Connors in its
