Camp Owatonna Vintage Slide Shows

Original 1979 enrollment slide shows recently restored!

We are pleased to announce that the original 1979 slide shows used to promote enrollment at Camp Owatonna and Camp Newfound have been restored and are available for viewing.  Before the days of Instagram, digital video clips, DVDs, and even VHS, the camps used photographic slides to share the story and purpose of camp with prospective families.  I can remember looking forward to the camp slide shows back when they would tour the Northeast visiting local families and Sunday Schools during the off-season.  For returning campers and families, seeing the photographs and hearing the sounds of camp would build the anticipation for the upcoming summer.

The 1979 Camp Owatonna slide show was originally photographed by Gail Miller Menschel based on the information provided with the original slide carousels.  The photographs were taken and the soundtrack was recorded during the second session of the 1979 summer camping season.  Narration was also added during the final mixing of the soundtrack.  The slide show is hosted at Vimeo to provide the best possible viewing experience.

Additional information (if you are interested):

The original Kodachrome slides were digitally transferred using the highest resolution possible, so that the resulting video would be in the high definition (HD) format.  The digital images were then sequenced with the original soundtrack (also digitally transferred from the original audio cassettes) using iMovie.  The camps appeared to have taken additional images in 1981 and 1982 to “refresh” the slide shows while using most of the original 1979 audio tracks.  Restoring the 1981/1982 versions will be a future project!

The slides were packed in their original carousels along with several boxes.  Over the years the slides had been borrowed or taken out for various promotional needs.  So, getting the slides back into their original order took some effort and time.  Fortunately, many of the Kodachrome slides were physically date stamped (“Jul-79”) which helped solve the puzzle.  There were a few missing slides from the original 140 slides needed, so I borrowed a few slides from the 1981 and 1982 images to fill in the gaps.  My hope is that the shows are about 95% true to the original.  I hope you enjoy the trip down memory lane.  Try listening with headphones and you can hear the snap-crackle-pop of the Council Fire, the waters of Long Lake lapping against the shore, and even the springs of the trampoline at Newfound!
